The Other Omylouse Strikes Back!!!

| Have moved into my room at Silwood (amusing am next door to Laurence's old room!) Small than before but I quite like it. I'd like it more if there was more air flow though :s
Prior to this on Saturday I collected my new old car & cooked a BBQ for dad's belated fathers day present. Luckily the rain held off. On Sunday afternoon we went to Go Ape in the Wyre forest. I arrived bang on time so of course everyone else was late! Much fun! Although I seem rather sore around the shoulders. Only one bit really scared me & that was the Tarzan Swing where you couldn't pull the ropes/harness tight before jumping. I'm ok so long as I can feel I'm tethered to something. Leaps of faith I'm not so good at.
Monday morning we loaded up the new car, drove to Silwood & dumped my bags (with minimal unpacking) then shot over to ![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif) lemming_mans for a brief breather before heading out again to see Star Trek whilst it's still in the cinema (a fact I'm most pleased by!) then grabbing a pub meal (we tried for one after Go Ape but the "Hot Food All Day" sign lied to us!) before relaxing with tv, hugs & the very last of the Greenday bubble bar (*sob* apparently Lush has stopped making it).
This morning I just missed rush hour in the run from Reading to Silwood & have spent a day of lab work & already I'm fed up of it! lol. We did have a break to make an expedition to get icecreams from the local corner store though!
Next point of fun for me & lemming_man: Seaside with bug_tea, bridgeannkell & l_j_b (Any more plans about that? Anyone who could do with a lift?) :) | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment   |

| Back in the UK again! Arrived safely, dumped stuff at Silwood, picked up lemming_man & am now settled (briefly) back in Brum with the parentals. Picking up car tomorrow (provided I get get the correct registration number from my Dad so can sort out insurance!) so will be mobile. BBQ with family tomorrow (ooh, must go make marinades for happy meats) & off to Go Ape on sunday :D

| Note to self: You have more important things to be spending money on than artwork, no matter how pretty & Gwen-suitable it is, like car, saving for New Zealand, getting to Pakistan & having suitable clothes for the wedding, oh & did I mention car?
*sighs*
I made the mistake of asking for the price of this & found it's within my reach!
ION: all my field work is done! Just need to go out with Zoe & the expensive range finder to get a few more distances from wild nest sites to the field egde (couldn't do it before as some nests in these fields were active), to check boundary types in a couple of fields & to try to find the bamboo canes we put in to help orientate ourselves within fields which are now mostly hidden by the growing crop :s

| Updates now I have some free time...
Car: After more faffing & lies from the garage I am giving up & getting a 'new' car. Dad's car-y friend knows of a 2 door Peugeot 206 up for grabs that is apparently a good deal. If it's still there he's looking at it on Saturday for me. Anyone got any comments (for or against 206s) before I commit? I suspect it'll have even less room inside than Rusty (who was a mini tardis!) but never mind. It does have a larger engine though *grins* (1800 cc diesel - although insurance companies say this doesn't exist... must check)
Work: Nearly all finished. Few more fields to finish off vegetation surveys in. Task for later once dew has dried up. Just lots of admin sorting to do now. 5 days til I leave here forever*! It's quite sad really :(
*well, possibly not forever, but it will never be home again

| Back in less than a fortnight now! Squeeee! Conting down the days til I get hugs again :D
Happily lemming_man has some time off so many hugs can be had to make up for the 2+ months without any :)
Crappy weather today; very windy, cloudy & cold with showers - when sun is out it's warm enough to do my work but that's never for long enough & anyway the ground is still damp (I can only take the chicks out when "warm & dry"). This has meant a frustrating afternoon of "will it brighten up/dry out? yes? maybe? no :(
Anyway there is always more stuff that needs doing (washing, sorting samples, cooking supper...) so I must dash again.

| Pheasant eggs are starting to hatch! Not that this'll make much difference to my workload at present. lol. Hope the partridge eggs start soon too or I'm screwed :s Well, that part of the project is. But I'll be able to get more data from pheasants & we have the skylark/lapwing/yellow wagtail samples too.
Not sure where our hot weather went to! Spring seems backwards here this year. April/May was baking hot (into the 30s) & too dry for the rops & birds & everything else. Now we're in June it's cold & grey! It had better warm up again in time for the pheasant trials... :s
Zoe's parents came to visit her last week so we had a day off whilst she went to Vienna & I just slept in (well, til 7am!) then did a little tidying up of the lab before relaxing & knitting for the rest of the day! I've had fun modifying the capelet pattern I am using to knit up the Red Fraggle yarn tictactoepony gave me so that it ends in 3 points, not just a flat edge! I think I have it sorted *crosses fingers*
Already my diary seems quite full for my return!( Dates booked )

Ok, since the weather has given me a bit of a break I'm going to write a proper entry now! (I should be doing paperwork but meh! Feeling a little windswept after sitting up in a hide in gale force winds!)
Firstly apologies for the bitty pieces already up & sorry for the lack of commentry on most entries. As you've either guessed or heard we're working bloody long hours here with very little time off & most time off is spent relaxing & recovering our eyes after staring through binoculars for so much of the day!

So yeah, that's why I haven't been updating/emailing/etc as much as I'd like. Hope everyone is having a great time & hopefully I'll do the rounds & get to see you all upon my return (26 days to go!)

| There are more photos up (link as before), getting up even earlier as we're trying to get into the fields for dawn (currently alarm's set for 4.30am), I have a room to come back to at Silwood end of June. It amuses me that I am in Southwood 1, I wonder what room.... No more John Smith 'trying-to-be-undergrads' waking me up at all hours! woo! :)

| Quick update: working 15 hour days, up at 5.45am. Only second day off so far so sorry for lack of communication!
Photos are up on flickr of some of the cute chicks we are working with plus a few of the area we are in. Enjoy!
Am missing Mark like crazy. Get a few hours of chatting online on my days off though which is nice :)
& now he is commenting on the sound of me typing.... lol

| | For those who missed it I'm back out in Austria for the next 2-3 months. Usual story regarding post & skype & odd hours etc.... We're already an hour ahead of you guys & since we're starting at dawn we'll be going to bed early too. We being me & Zoe (MSc student working with me this year). Slightly different from last year in that we are both going to spend the 1.5-2 months following wild birds (skylarks, lapwings, etc) & try to find nests etc. Then I'll have one more batch of pheasant chicks (possibly mixed with partridge chicks) then we're flying home for the final analysis & write up of doom..... | | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

| So I spent last week partly feeling ill & mostly packing. I've now left Silwood (just bedding & toothbrush there!) - with one stop off the night before I fly out to Austria - & am settled back home with my lovely doggie & parents Freeview box!

| Weekly update & memeage...
Weekend was fun. Took friday off work to see cath_er_ine, we went for a nice stroll in the sunshine & ate ice-creams lamenting at their inflated prices. We also learnt what Skunk Cabbage is! Saturday we went bird ringing & whilst we didn't catch much it was a small group so we got to do some. lemming_man fed us tasty tasty breads & cheeses for lunch then I flopped in front of the tv all afternoon until it was time to go & see Rob Brydon (which was much fun). Went straight to bed after & was too tired to even have some hot chocolate. A lie in sunday followed by a trip into London to meet up with some friends of lemming_man's, a rather late lunch (I believe it was 4.30 before the food showed up!) & Watchmen at the imax. Imax is awesome but I should probably wear contacts if I go again as a couple of times I could see the edges of my frames obscuring the screen! Quick pint afterwards before heading home & crashing - managed the hot chocolate first though this time!
Today has been day of Organising Stuff. I have opticians appointment for tomorrow to get more contacts, my flight to Austria is booked, I know which account I need to claim it back from, have booked mum into visitors lodge so she can drop us at Heathrow and started the process of getting back into halls upon my return. Still one phone call to make but I'll wait til I have the office to myself again.
